In 1719 the young Abraham Levie from Lemgo set out on a journey that would take him through the German-speaking lands to Italy and Elba over several years. His travel memoirs, written down in Amsterdam, survive in manuscript. The Ensemble “simkhat hanefesh” accompanies Abraham Levie on his travels in music and presents Jewish music of the Renaissance and the Baroque connected with the places along the way. Short readings from Levie’s memoirs complement the music and bring the traveller’s experiences to life.
